Please read the Getting Started tutorial before commencing this expedition.
Geoscience Australia, and its predecessor organisations (eg Bureau of Mineral Resources (BMR)) have collected or been given a large number of samples (including rock, mineral and fossil). Some of these samples date back to the very early part of the 20th century and stem from all four corners of the globe.
To aid in analysis very small parts of the sample would be processed to produce a microscope slide. Traditionally these slides were examined by the geologist to gain an understanding of the structure and make up of the rock and the area. Modern techniques allow the detailed chemical composition of the rock to be determined via computerised analysis of the slide.
We are seeking to open up the information contained in the card catalog of the samples.
