Feature Expedition

Cases heard in the Hobart Court of Petty Sessions against women 1850-54 Part 2

Field notesFounders and Survivors - Digitising Tasmania’s Past

The Hobart Convict Penitentiary is an internationally significant convict site located right in the heart of Hobart CBD. In the early 1830’s, a service in the chapel of the Van Diemen’s Land Prisoners’ Barracks Penitentiary was far from a serene and holy experience as convict cells were located beneath the floorboards.

Each of the records in this register provides the date, the magistrate on duty, the woman's name, the transportation ship, the original length of the sentence, the alleged crime, the verdict and punishment. Detailed witness statements giving further information about the circumstances of the charges are also often included. This is the second expedition for this document series.
